Kilchurn, Argyll's iconic castle on the loch
This brooding 15th century ruin commands a breathtaking spot on a peninsula in Loch Awe and is perhaps the most iconic of all Argyll's many castles, if not in all of Scotland.
This impressive five story structure was built by the family of Sir Colin Campbell, Lord of Glenorchy in 1450, with the construction said to be overseen by his wife, Margaret. For 150 years it was the clan's stronghold, and in the later years of its use housed a garrison for troops sent to Argyll after the Jacobite Rebellion. You can tour the ruin from April-October and explore the many preserved rooms on several stories.
